Fire Department
The Los Angeles County Fire Department EXPLORER PROGRAM was established in 1975 and is designed for young adults from 15 to 21 years of age who are interested in learning about a career in the fire service. Job Corps
It's a free federal job training program. There are 110 Job Corps campuses across the nation, offering job training in more than 160 occupations. To be eligible you must:
- Be between the ages of 16 and 24
- Be a U.S. Citizen or legal resident
- Meet the income guidelines (not hard to do!)
- Be ready and willing to do it. Job Corps has some strict rules, and people who aren't serious about learning don't last. But 70 percent of the students who complete the program get jobs, go to college or join the military upon graduation. For MORE information, call 1-800-733-JOBS.
Hire LA's Youth The City of Los Angeles and the Office of Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa present nine diverse youth programs that strive to provide employment opportunities to youth and young adults from ages 14-24.
L.A. Youth at Work Do you want to increase your skills and knowledge on how to get a job? Do you want to have access to paid full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions? The Work Readiness Certificate is a portable credential that will put entry-level job seekers in the front of the line when looking for a job in L.A. Please visit a job skill workshop at LA Youth at Work to get your work readiness certificate. The program is aimed at young people, 16 - 24 years old.

Job Related Expenses (Only for ILP eligible Youth, based on available ILP funds, please contact your ILP Coordinator)
You've got to spend money to make money. You can't show up for an office job wearing a T-shirt and shorts. No way. You might need to pay for parking. You might have to pay professional fees or annual union dues. To help launch your career and get you off on the right foot YDS will pay for:
- Computers.
- Tuition for Training (see Education section).
- Uniforms, tools, union dues, and professional fees.
- Transportation. If you're already employed or still looking for a job, get assistance for parking and local transportation.
Who is Eligible?
- All ILP eligible youth seeking work or currently working.
How to Apply for Service:
- Contact your CSW or DPO and Transition Coordinator with specific, documented requests that verify educational, vocational, or employment-related need for services or equipment.
- Provide receipts and written cost estimates upon request.
