Steps to Independent Living

You can get up to $2,000 per year for your own car insurance in order to meet the legal minimum California requirement (liability and uninsured motorists amounts of $15,000/person and $30,000/accident and $5,000 for damages)! (Funds for auto insurance not available during 2005)
Computer Equipment

Independent Living Program spending plan does not allocate funds to purchase computers for college students because foster youth who are enrolled in college are eligible to receive up to $5000 in Chafe Education/Training Vouchers by submitting an application to the California Student Aid Commission.  These funds may be used for computers or other education-related expenses.

You may be able to be reimbursed for computer training classes and workshops with approval from your social worker or coordinator. There is also free computer training offered at some of the Transition Resource Centers.
If you are 18 and emancipated you can take pre-paid driving lessons. If you are a 16-17 year old pre-emancipated youth, you can get reimbursed for your driving lessons, up to $350 per person. Drivers wanted!
Take a Financial Aid Workshop and complete the application that will get you student loans and money in scholarships for college and other professional/vocational training. There is money available to assist to you to get the education you want. Take advantage of this!
Want to challenge yourself and test your real life skills? Earn a cash reward to spend a day at an Independent Cities event, trying to open a bank account, secure an apartment, set up utilities, get a driver's license, and negotiate other real life situations. Put yourself to the test!
Wish you had someone in your life to offer you guidance and give you some support? Check out the Mentoring Program and find your match!

Since the budget is limited, please note that the services and benefits described in this website are available to eligible transitioning youth 16 - up to their 21st birthday in Los Angeles County, on a needs-basis, until all funds are spent for the fiscal year (the fiscal year ends June 30th).  There are some services available for youth 14 - 15.  Some of the resources are listed for your information and ARE NOT to be considered an endorsement by Los Angeles County.
