Steps to Independent Living

Roshell Davis

I always knew that I would attend college. The only problem was how to pay for everything.  Receiving grants and scholarships from school and government programs, including ILP, has made attending college possible. The money I receive from ILP for books and supplies really comes in handy. ILP also offers other resources but you have to find out about them. Your life is your responsibility.

Being in foster care has its negative side as well as some benefits. I was in foster care since age 10.  I was lucky to have had only two placements. Being a foster child gave me the opportunity to be in ILP, which has benefited my education.

I just completed my first year of college. I have experienced lots of things and met lots of new people. Among one of my experiences is the experience of living in the dorms. I lived with three other young women with different personalities. We had good times and bad. Life is like a roller coaster. There are ups and downs, but I think that everything I experienced has made me a stronger person.

The Youth Development Services receives a set budget every year from state and federal government sources. Resources are distributed according to need and not as an entitlement. Since the budget is limited, please note that the services and benefits described in this website are available to eligible transitioning youth 16 - 20 in Los Angeles County, on a needs-basis, until all funds are spent for the fiscal year (there are some ILP services available for youth 14 - 15). Some of the resources are listed for your information and ARE NOT to be considered an endorsement by Los Angeles County
